They surround the Equestrian Statue of D.José I and were placed in partnership with the CML, within its philosophy of maintenance and recovery of this important historical and cultural legacy.

Public lighting in this emblematic city square began in 1780, with oil lamps, with dim and expensive light, where every day when the moon did not alleviate the darkness, the lamps, at nightfall and at dawn From the sun, they climbed onto the ladder to turn them on and off, a situation that continued over time and accompanied the various types of fuel, such as smelly whale oil, oil, gas, until the arrival of electric lighting in 1889.
